The Los Angeles public library has been suffering from major budget cuts. Studio City Branch Library is one of the libraries that have dealt with the library cuts. This branch is lucky enough to have the support of volunteers, and residents who are called “the friends of library.” There are over 220 volunteers for this particular branch. Every month they have a book sale to raise money for the library. The friends of the library provide anything from scotch tape and color printers, to speakers and programs for the library.
Volunteer Charlotte Howard has been supporting the Studio City Branch Library ever since it first opened. She began her volunteer work by doing a beautification project and restoring the garden at the library. Since then she has helped with the creation of the website for the friends of the library, and creating donation labels for books that the library needs. Charlotte says the volunteers donate their leftover books from the book sale and pass them along to charities. Charlotte said, “There are so many thing we do [for the library].”
The President of the friends of the library, April Howard says there is a measure coming up in the March election where libraries may receive a larger amount of money. She hopes the Los Angeles community will support the measure. “Council man, Bernard Parks is really snotty and stiff about spending money,” says April, “but he himself proposed why don’t we change the charter that insures the library will get a specific percentage of money.”
April has been president for this particular friends organization for over 10 years. Most libraries change presidents every two years.
Due to the budget cuts the library is closed two days a week. The libraries are busy during the hours that they are opened. Librarians and staff have suffered layoffs. April says there were six clerks at the library and now it is down to three or four. They use to have seven messenger clerks now it is down to four. Their job is to collect the books from the book drop and reshelf books. “Everybody is unbelievably over worked in there.” April said.
Studio city library branch is lucky enough to have so many supporters partially due to it being a higher income area in Los Angeles. According to American Fact Finder, the average income in Studio City is $52,175.00. The dominant ethnicity in the area is Caucasian, which accounts for 74.3%, followed by Latino, which accounts for 15.1% of the community.
After comparing the library budgets for Los Angeles, the libraries went from 2007-2008 having 114.7 million at 3.2% to 2008-2009 having 114.2 million at 3.0%.If you want to join the Studio City friends of the library, or to donate, please check out their website at studiolibraryfriends.org.

My classmates and I were asked to bring in pictures of what we normally do over the weekend. We were then asked to make a collage music video and this is what I came up with. I chose a few of my favorite pictures in the class, and asked some of my classmates about them...
Nikki is a twin and she brought a picture of her and her sister. "That's my twin sister and she's been my twin for 22 year's now." The picture was them together on campus. She is an english major and Nikki is a Journalism major.
Christina brought in a picture of the beach. "The beach is fun with friends and family!" The picture was taken at Santa Monica Beach, and she goes to that beach more than any other one.
Anita's Picture is of her year old yorkie named Shia. The picture was taken at Fox Hills park. They spent the day in the park with her sister, and her sisters dog named Ginger, she is also a yorkie.
Artists shared their love and passion for fruit at the 18th Street Art Complex over the summer of 2008 in Santa Monica. The exhibit was titled "Citizen Artists Making Emphatic Statements". The exhibit was put on by the wife of Al Nodal, and he was there with friends to show his support. He stated that "Its an exhibition about artists that work in a public realm, artists that care about issues in the community."
The artwork included paintings, photographs, and free standing installations. "We look at city, we look at urban space, we look at how people interact with each other, and the space of the city and in-particular with plants and the nature in the city... we kind of look at the whole world through the lens of fruit," said one of the artists, Matias viegener.
The main focus piece was the "Fallen Fruit" piece, which was the one of people in protective suites, walking down the city streets and protesting with posters that read "Fresh fruit is a human right!" and "Eat local, think global."
The atmosphere was lively with music, laughter, and people who shared a love for the environment. There were people of all ages ranging from infants to elderly people. Everyone seemed to all have one thing in common, they all loved the city, art and fruit!

Los Angeles is in debt and looking for places to cut expenses, so now they are turning to the libraries and cutting their budget. Now there are hundreds of people losing the jobs they love, and thousands of people being pushed out of their comfortable informational and study safe haven.
In a May article from the LA Times, Katie Linthicum writes a piece about librarians and people from the community protesting Mayor Villaraigosas plan to cut libraries budget. The proposal was to cut jobs and instead of having the libraries open six days a week, they will be open just five days a week. The plan is to "shrink library operating costs to about $58 million, down from $68.4 million this year and $75.8 million the previous year," writes Linthicum.
In a LA Weekly article, by Patrick Range McDonald, he writes in the September article that the city is asking for the libraries to pay back their DWP bills after they were slammed with a huge budget cut. Around 91,000 school students go to public libraries during the week after school, and with the days that they are forced to be closed, around 15,000 people are being shut out.
KNBC News article by Olsen Ebright writes in his July article about the libraries being forced to close their doors two days a week. "Starting July 18, the Central Library and all 72 branches will be closed on Sundays, Mondays and holidays," writes Ebright.
The yearly budget is $117 million, which is a $5.19 million cut from the previous year. http://www.lapl.org/newsroom/releases/Budget_08-09.html
In Los Angeles' public library system, there is a central library, 8 regional branches, and 64 community branches. over 17,300,000 people have visited the library this year. This budget cut effects so many people who value the library and its resources.

This Shiny Green bag clearly shows the image of the snack of the dry and spicy chick pea on the bag. It smells like a strong spice blend, and after tasting it, I realize that it dissolved quickly in my mouth and tasted like hard boiled eggs with a strong spice to somewhat mask a rotting taste of the chick pea itself. It had a powdery texture to it, and was relatively soft with a slight crunch to the bite. I could only manage to eat one after swallowing my first bite. The spice for the small snack seemed to over bare the natural taste of the fresh chick pea.
B. Social Network Review
I would never go out and buy this snack for the reason I could not stand it. I understand that everyone has different taste buds, but my taste buds did not agree with the Chana Cracker. The spiciness and the egg taste were overwhelming to me. I would recommend this for anyone who likes spice and eggs because thats sure what it taste like.
Ever since I was sixteen years old, and received my drivers license and a new car, my parents put a strict curfew of Midnight. This curfew was in place until I reached the age of 21 years old. I always tried to argue my way into staying out later, but they rarely budged. I rebelled countless times and came home when I wanted to, but received consequences such and getting my gas card taken away, or grounding. I can recall one time when I was 18 years old, and it was my friends 21st Birthday. He had rented a Hummer limo and invited all of our friends to party from 9 p.m. until 3 a.m. I knew my parents would never let me go because I would be breaking my curfew, but I went knowing that when I came home there would a large punishment. After partying and having a great night, I walked through the door and into the kitchen. I quietly opened the fridge for a waterbottle, and when I closed the door, my mother was standing behind it with her arms folded and a nasty look on her face. I knew it was going to be bad. She asked me if I knew what time it was and I said yes and started walking up the stairway up to my room because I was too tired from the party. She followed me to my room, and continually yelled at me for about 15 minutes and left. I quickly fell asleep and when I woke up the next morning, there she was again in my room. After that I was not able to go out the following weekend. When it comes to stiff rules, it is difficult for me to have discipline,If you can't compromise with me, I can't compromise with you. Even after that night, I continually broke my curfew, until the age of 21 when my parents finally lifted the curfew. After that, I realized that I'd rater be home around the midnight hour and now I am rarely out past 12.
